Collar or Harness? Which is Better for Your Dog?

Hello and welcome to Expert Dog Training

First and foremost, all dogs are welcome here at Expert Dog Training. We take pride in training a wide variety of dogs to excel in obedience, tricks, agility, scent work, and even aggression.

We also specialize in training dogs to become emotional support animals because we love helping people through their most difficult seasons.

In today's blog, we are going to talk about LEASH TRAINING!

Many have questions on whether you should use a harness, a collar, a slip lead, different types of leads, etc… I'm going to condense those questions into one tip!

‼️I do not recommend harnesses for the purpose of leash training‼️

If you think about it, dogs were bred to pull, or to “mush.” When they feel something pull on their chest, they actually want to “mush” or lunge forward. This is what a lot of dog’s were heavily bred for before they were bred for other things. So, keep in mind when a dog feels pulling on a harness or on their chest, they are automatically going to think you're communicating to them to go forward.

So, what should we use?

I recommend a Biothane collar. Biothane is nonslip and waterproof. Especially when leash training, it's very important that your dogs don't get away, and this collar can be snug, without being tight. The purpose is not to pull, but to stay in place.

The collar needs to stay way up high on the dog’s neck. You want it right behind their ears so it's not on the trachea!

With the collar up high, you can actually guide their neck, compared to having it down low where it could be doing silent damage that you can't see, that will eventually lead to tracheal collapse or nerve damage in their spine.

Your dog should be so sensitive to the leash that when they feel it being pulled at all, they know they are doing something wrong, and they need to look to you for direction.

Having the collar up high will also help the dog feel the leash better, versus down low, where they automatically assume what you want them to do is pull.

We know this will be helpful for you and your dog and we look forward to testimonies of great communication in your relationship!
