How to Use an Collar - The Ultimate Guide

Hello and welcome to Expert Dog Training

First and foremost, all dogs are welcome here at Expert Dog Training. We take pride in training a wide variety of dogs from emotional support, obedience, tricks, agility, scent work, and even aggression.

In today's blog, we're going to talk about ECollars!

There are several different types of ECollars that are out there. I personally love the Mini Educator and this brand. It's also available in different sizes, such as the 1200 Educator and the Micro Educator.

When I'm talking about an ECollar, I want you to know that I don't agree with or use any collars with electrical shock in them.

When I say “ECollar,” I mean electric because it turns on and plugs into the wall to charge. I'm not talking about electric collars that send shocks to the dog.

I don't believe in that, I don't think that that's necessary!

The prongs on the ECollar send a twitch to a very large muscle on the side of the dog’s neck. All it does is stimulate that muscle. It’s more so a tap on the shoulder. It's a good tool to get their attention and to teach healthy boundaries without causing fear or pain!

I even have my clients feel it before I put it on the dog. I wouldn't put it on my dog if I wouldn't put it on myself.

How does the Mini Educator ECollar work?

  • Hold down the power button on the back for 3 seconds to turn on and off

  • The screen will come on

  • You will see a red dot on the collar and on the remote. These are magnetic

  • Touch the two dots together.

  • If the collar blinks green it is charged and ready to go!

A nice feature on this collar is that there’s a flashlight! Tap the power button once for a flashlight, twice for a strobe light, and three times to turn the light off.

How do we use the Mini Educator ECollar?

There's a button on the back with the letters ‘M’ and ‘C’ on it.

‘M’ stands for “momentary” and the ‘C’ stands for “continuous.”

This is how long the stimulation is delivered. Both of these settings are needed when training!

The two buttons on the side are what delivers the stimulation.

Black button = Momentary stim (used most often) for 1/10 of a second

Red button = Stim for 3/10 of a second

Or, if I hold the red button down, it can deliver a stim up to ten seconds. That would be for an emergency situation only.

There's a ‘1D’ flashing on the screen, this means one dog system. The remote has the ability to pair up to two collars at a time!

At the top of the remote, there's a dial. If you turn it clockwise, it goes all the way to 100.

So essentially, your dog has the ability to go all the way to be corrected 100 times before it goes up.

I always recommend starting at a 5 or 6 and going up in increments of two or three. It really depends on the dog and what the distractions are. Is the dog really attentive or really distracted? Is it a high triggering environment and the dog has met its threshold? Those things will determine how high you have to go up when you use the remote.

EXPERT TIPS:

  • The Mini Educator has a half mile range, which is good to know if your dog gets away from you or your dog is off leash trained.

  • Prongs only on the dog 8-12 hours. For short haired dogs, move the prongs every 2 hours for the first day or 2 the collar is on to prevent skin breakdown.

  • You should be able to fit 2 fingers in the collar, but barely able to lift the collar. This keeps prongs in place and prevents friction sores

  • Collar stays on if the dog is awake and you're with them. Collar comes off if dog is in their kennel, you're gone, or asleep at night.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding these collars. We recommend these because they are precise and precision is key when training!
